OK. Just ask that question to a "bodybuilder" or a "weightlifter" and you could get a load of an response. While it is accurate that bodybuilders and weightlifters will train with weights - they are two very unlike sports, with two very distinct goals to achieve, especially when we are referring to them on the professional or semi-professional competitive level.
A professional or competitive bodybuilder is chiefly concerned with a sculpted look. Most are looking for an a body image that shows off a lean and well defined muscle mass to its greatest visual outward look. A weightlifter on the other hand is primarily concerned the strength in the areas of their competition. In other words the muscles most important during a Snatch or Deadlift competition. However the competitive bodybuilder, showing in a competition has nothing to do with how much you can lift or how strong your muscles are, but how well your overall physique looks. Most of the muscles on a competitive bodybuilder most certainly appear symmetrical, and proportional, so bodybuilders must work out all parts of the body equally.
Now if you are not planning on competing in either sport the difference in them may not really be that critical to you. However, the discussion how powerful it is to clearly pinpointyour ultimate goals as to why you are lifting weights. Are you looking to improve physique? Maximize your strength and stamina? Or maybe a little of both? If you are not a competitor, it really matters less what you identify with, then what you want to achieve with weightlifting. When you know what you want to get out of a weightlifting regimen you can then craft a specific series of routines, exercises and lifestyle changes to attain these goals. Bodybuilding
